The first of The Seasons: Autumn trio released by TWE, to welcome the fall. let’s dive in
Ledaig 17 yo 2006 ,55,4%, The Whisky Exchange ‘Seasons – Autumn’ 2023, butt #16
Nose: Opening with earthy peat smoke and dark fruits – juicy prunes and blackberries lead the way. Sweet treacle mingles with coal-like smokiness. Further nosing reveals some tar notes, followed by dried raisins and fragrant honey with a herbal edge. Charred orange zest adds brightness, while damp oak and tobacco bring depth. Subtle smoked meats lathered with sweet bbq sauces linger in the background.
Palate: Bold and robust. Sooty smokiness dominates initially, cracked black pepper and savory smoked meat notes. Sweet elements emerge with caramel-coated apples and dark chocolate, alongside roasted coffee beans. Touches of kerosene and burnt rubber add complexity. The development brings charred wood, a hint of sea salt, and baked plums.
Finish: quite long-lasting. Features sweet-and-smoky barbecued meat, coastal seaweed, more plum notes, and coffee.
Summary: This Ledaig successfully combines heavy smoke with rich sweetness and meaty undertones – perfect for autumn evenings after outdoor activities. Not a cheap buy at £240, but solid Ledaig stuff for distillery style lovers. Very good indeed!
