Lagavulin ‘Iain McArthur Farewell Dram’ 18 yo

Iain McArthur, known affectionately as “Pinky” retired last December after an illustrious career spanning over 50 years in the whisky industry, making him an icon of Islay and a legend at Lagavulin. His invaluable contributions have made a lasting impact on the distillery, its visitors, and the community of Islay. In appreciation of his dedication, Lagavulin Distillery has announced the release of a special bottling named ‘Iain’s Farewell Dram.’

McArthur embarked on his whisky journey at Port Ellen Distillery before joining Lagavulin, where he played a pivotal role for half a century. Renowned for his adaptability, he seamlessly transitioned between various responsibilities, from peat cutting to overseeing casks and conducting memorable warehouse tasting sessions for distillery visitors.

The bottling, named after McArthur, was meticulously chosen, with the cask filled by him 18 years ago and the bottles hand-poured by him at Lagavulin Distillery. Aged in second-fill Manzanilla casks, this special edition offers a delightful sherried Lagavulin, perfect for enjoying regardless of the weather, even in Israel.

The bad news: Only 18 bottles are offered for purchase exclusively at Lagavulin Distillery through a ballot system. But Diageo promises further details on how to acquire a bottle that will be shared via Lagavulin and Malts.com social media channels in the upcoming months. So, don’t despair. 350 quid a pop? is this worth the price? Let’s find out!

let’s have a wee taste, shall we?

Lagavulin Iain McArthur Farewell Dram 18 yo , 58.7% , £350.

Nose: The aroma reveals hints of smoldering embers, dry cereals reminiscent of Horlicks, ripe green orchard fruits with a touch of gala apple, distant notes of vanilla pods, and yogurt-coated raisins. As you delve deeper, a subtle tarriness emerges alongside white pepper, dried tea leaves, as well as notes of cereal. There’s a presence of cut hay and fragrant spices like toasted cardamom and cinnamon, evoking a farm-like ripeness often found in aged peaty whiskies. These aromas interplay harmoniously, creating a complex and deep nose.

Palate: On the palate, flavors of smoldering wood smoke intertwine with a kick of chili pepper, balanced by the refreshing crispness of red apple. Subtle hints of cinnamon add depth to the subtly sweet profile.

Finish: Very long and powerful finish that leaves a lingering peppery tingle on the palate, with a hint of ginger and black lapsang tea. Lovely!

In conclusion: it’s a remarkable culmination of an extraordinary career extending over five decades within the same distillery. What an achievement! Here’s to you, Pinky. May your glass always be full, and may you relish your well-deserved retirement on the beautiful island. I have no doubt our paths will cross again at one of the Feis events in the future. It’s impossible to think of Lagavulin without recalling Iain and his exceptional warehouse tastings.

Slainte!
