TWE The Gastronomy Selection 37 yo Blended Malt

Good morning, and happy Spring to you all… some nice news from TWE today. with a spanking new release: The Gastronomy Selection 37-Year-Old Blended Malt.

The whisky is the first expression in The Whisky Exchange’s Gastronomy Selection, a series of spirits designed from the ground up to be used when cooking, in both the home and professional kitchens. This first entry in the ongoing range is a 37-year-old blended malt Scotch whisky, focused on nutty and caramel notes, making it perfect for integration with almost any cuisine.

“Since the first time I replaced the white wine in my Bolognese with 1980s malt whisky I’ve never looked back,” says The Whisky Exchange co-founder Sukhinder Singh. “I know it’s not traditionally Italian, but it really brings an extra layer of complexity.”

Using The Whisky Exchange head buyer Dawn Davies MW’s knowledge of wine and food pairing, as well as extensive product testing with a range of top London restaurants, the whisky has been balanced to be a versatile addition to almost any dish, adding layers of extra complexity.

This new and exciting project launches on Saturday 1 April 2023, and will be available from The Whisky Exchange’s website and London shops. There are only 1021 bottles of this whisky available, bottled at 51.3% and priced at £199.

I am in the mood for cooking, so let’s try some:

The Gastronomy Selection 37 Year Old Blended Malt , 51.3% ,

£199.

Nose: Nice old whisky notes with a lovely fruity edge in the form of orchard fruit galore: peaches, pears, apricots, and maybe a hint of kumquat. There’s also a nice waxy feeling to it, perfectly in sync with the mature whisky notes, and lovely wood and spirit interplay. More oak and some grape pith along the way, as well as crushed almonds. Nice stuff here!

Palate: A lovely continuation of the nose fruit-wise: there’s plenty of that, with more sugary syrupy sweetness (but in a good way, mind you). Spices develop and then it gets more chocolatey, with almond pralines, hazelnut ganache, and more of the old oak feeling to it with some pepper, mint, and maybe the odd hint of tobacco.

Finish: Quite long, with polished oak, and oranges.

Conclusion: Very very good stuff, for sipping and cooking?! Elegant 37-year-old blended malt as good as they come. A nice touch this year from TWE on the old April 1st idea.

Available on the TWE site, really it is!
