Tasting the Benriach Latada 18 yo

The Latada is another special release by The Benriach, aged 18 years just like its 18 year old siblings the Albariza and Dunder (reviewed here). The difference is again the cask finish, this time we’re talking Madeira finish instead of the dark rum / PX, which did work quite well for the other two (I preferred the PX to the …

Two 18 yo Peated Benriach–Albariza & Dunder

Time to try a few Peated Benriachs that have eluded me for some time (no idea why). Both are 18 year old, peated, what differentiates one another is the cask finish chosen. The first one Albariza was finished in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. The name Albariza comes from a type of chalky soil which is typical for Andalucia (in Spain). …

BenRiach 1998 17 Year Old PX Finish TWE Exclusive (Cask 7758)

After the lovely Glendronach exclusive I’ve reviewed yesterday, comes the bottle from the “sister” distillery of BenRiach (they we released together), this one is 17 years old, a Tripe distilled whisky  and was only finished in PX, rather than aged in it for the entire length of maturation. Actually I’ve bought a bottle if this one (even before I tasted …

The new Benriach 10 yo–Tasting notes

So, a new Benriach 10 year old? what’s so “new” about it? well this – This release is the first one that was  produced predominantly from spirit distilled under The BenRiach Distillery Company’s eleven-year ownership. The cask formula focuses on ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, while the spirit is unpeated (unlike the Curiositas 10 yo).
BenRiach 10 Year Old , 43.0% , …

Benriach 1991 – Whisky Agency “Mollusc & Medusa”–Review

A few days ago I visited a whisky buddy where we held a bit of a dramming evening together, nothing planned, all Impromptu. I brought over a few older Glenglassaugh samples (a post is coming soon, brilliant stuff single casks from the 1970’s) , and we also drank a few Indie bottlings, one of them was this. The Benriach does …

Like a Virgin? – Benriach virgin cask # 4385 1994

A 1994 BR single cask finished in Virgin oak. Yes, The Benriach have jumped on the new virgin oak bandwagon, and while It can add some flavor to whisky, one has to wonder, why the original cask was not good enough to have been bottled without it being re-casked into a virgin oak cask, to be “enhanced”. Virgin oak can …

Two 1970’s Single Cask Benriachs [Batch 10]

After we tried two younger single casks from the latest batch it’s time for the real deal : Two single casks from the 70’s. Mind you, i was only a baby when those two were filled (boy, I am getting older). 1976 casks have quite a reputation for being amazing, and I do wonder how those would stand up to …

Benriach 1998 cask 7633 PX puncheon finish

Time for another of the latest BR single casks just released. Not a peated cask this time but equally interesting : this one is triple distilled (yes, you read that right T-r-i-p-l-e) which is quite unusual for the Benriach as only a small fraction of the spirit distilled annualy is triple distilled there. It has been matured for 15 years …
