An ex-bourbon cask Glenfarclas? yes! –SMWS 1.194 Attractive, rounded and comforting, 16 yo

A bourbon cask Glenfarclas? Blasphemy! some would shout, and indeed there are not that many cask GFs bottled from an ex-bourbon. Indeed, Glranfarclas is synonomous with sherry maturation, and although you’d never guess this was a GF blind, their spirit is top notch, and works perfectly well with ex-bourbon. I’ve tasted a bourbon cask sample way back when the Glenfarclas …

SMWS 27.109 Guns on the grouse moor [Springbank] 16 yo

Dirty Whisky can be wonderful if you enjoy that thing, dirty sherry especially, and whenever I come across such a cask, which displays enough dirtiness, without being way “off”, it is a time to be merry. This 16 year old Springer from the SMWS is such a dram. Distilled in 1992, comes from a big badass Gorda cask containing some …

Review–SMWS 26.98 Lively as an electric acrobat–Clynelish 10 yo

Time for some more SMWS , this time with a 10 year old Clynelish with this very nice name (we’re used to those from the SMWS, aren’t we?). The facts are : 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrel , 10 year aging, bottled at a nice 60.5% abv ,and destined for the NZ market (so says whiskybase).  Some people will think a …

A rocking chair dram – SMWS 9.80 [Glen Grant] 20 yo Sauternes Cask

Time for a few SMWS bottlings I tasted recently from the last year or so, and the first one is a delicious ultra sweet whisky from a refill Sauternes cask.  Distilled on the 16th November 1992, and bottled at 49.5%.

SMWS 73.55 apples and pears [Aultmore 21]–A funky weird dram…

Our noses and Palates are very different, that’s given. Some people love certain whiskies other people can not appreciate and vise versa, and this single cask from SMWS (I got from Tom, a long time ago – thanks bro!) is a terrific example of such a whisky. Before I tasted it, I was browsing Tom’s site (weird, as I try …

SMWS 127.39 ‘Intensely Tasty’ (Port Charlotte 11 year old)

Not long ago I reviewed two other SMWS PCs – 127.37 ‘Dinosaurs dancing to Stravinsky (which was EPIC) and 127.40  –  Mango chicken vindaloo, which again was excellent. It’s quite clear I am fond of young PCs, and I wonder how this one will going to be when we compare it to those two monsters. At 11 years old and …

After yesterday’s Ardbeg , It’s time for a cracking dram from the SMWS. at a much nicer price (If you are a member and was lucky enough to buy one in time).  They have decided to bottle a really nice edition for this year’s Feis, a 17 years old cask , distilled 25th September 1997 at 57.1% abv, refill ex-sherry …

SMWS 127.40[Port Charlotte] – Mango chicken vindaloo

This is not a new SMWS edition, it’s from the Feb batch or so. I am quite a fan of Port Charlotte, when it comes to peaty whiskies. It’s not a secret I drink less and less heavily peated drams on a daily basis, I guess a palate or mood change, but sometimes when the weather is right, or when …

SMWS 10.77 ‘Beware of the monster’ , Bunnahabhain 2007

Young whisky can be awesome, and there is nothing to be ashamed of when bottling young cracking drams. This young Bunna is a great example of such a whisky. Distilled in 2007 and bottled in 2014.  But this youngster does not feel as young, and I really was surprised at how good it was.  So let’s end this week’s reviews …
