The Bomb – Pedro Ximénez Cask Finish (The Whisky Lounge)

About two years ago I tasted the Oloroso finish version of this bomb, and quite liked it. I was happy with a 20cl bottles, but when I got the bottle, I noticed that I’ve ordered the wrong version, and that there’s another PX finish version I was not aware of. I never bothered replacing it, hoping the PX would be …

Glendronach 1994 Cask #3400 – Abbey Whisky – Review

Another big sherry whisky today after yesterday’s Glenlivet, and this time from Glendronach and Abbey Whisky.
Abbey whisky does bottle some cracking stuff, and the last time I tasted a Glenronach they chose to bottle , the GlenDronach 1993 cask #33, It was good stuff (notes here). Apparently it was a big success and they were searciing to bottle a new …

Abbey Whisky Kilchoman 5 yo single Cask #285/09

It’s always fun getting a sample of a Kilchoman single cask by surprise. That’s exactly what happened last week, when a wee samples arrived courtesy of the famous whisky fairy. I was not aware of this new cask bottle for Abbey whisky, and later that day sat to explore it. The “dry” facts say it’s 5 years old , distilled …

Darkness! Macallan 15 Year Old Pedro Ximénez Cask Finish

Continuing the very interesting line of Sherry cask finished single malts from Master of Malt (Maverick Drinks). This time they took a 15 year old Macallan and finished it in 50 litre first-fill Pedro Ximénez casks for an additional 3 months. What happened?  Good things did happen, i assure you.

Darkness! Ardbeg 21 Year Old Pedro Ximénez Cask Finish

Question: What’s the shortest time span known to mankind?
Answer: It’s the time it takes a single cask Ardbeg to sell out on any Whisky merchant’s website… This one was not different, and I guess it sold out in minutes. But luckily I still got a sample of that lovely stuff to try, so here goes, and don’t bang …

Glendronach 1985 Cask # 1035 PX Puncheon 27 yo

This is the first cask I am tasting from Batch #9 of single casks released last December (full story here). No reason why I started with the 1985 but I had a feeling this is going to be a good one, and boy was I right (not that there are any bad GD single casks).  Distilled 13/12/85 bottled at 53.7% …

Two Young(er) Glendronach single casks from batch 8

Batch 8 of Glendronach has been released with batch 10 of BenRiach (Its sister distillery) a short while ago. I chose to start with the BRs then enter Glendronach sherry land, and here we are. GlenDronach indeed is synonymous with sherry casks, and indeed their entire range is heavily sherried, and very much loved by sherry heads. I chose to …

Tasting Laphraoig PX Cask

After the success of the Triple wood , and it’s migration to the general retail sector from travel retail, Laphraoig introduces another retail exclusive this time finished in PX sherry casks rather the Oloroso casks  (as in the triple wood). PX being a much thicker and sweeter sherry, is sure to impart sweeter notes to the liquid. The triple wood …

‘GlenDronach Time’ , Session #2 : The 12 year old ‘Original’

We continue our journey in GlenDronach land, with the lovely 12 year old which is i’ve learned to know is a favourite of many GlenDronach fans. Matured in a combination of PX (Pedro Ximenez) and Oloroso Sherry Casks, this whisky is the entry level GlenDronach (if we don’t take into account the younger Octarine reviewed last year). This expression is …

Quick Dram : BenRiach ‘Heredotus Fumosus’ 12 yo – a journey in Peated Speyside

The Benriach distillery is located in the heart of Speyside, 3 miles from the city of Elgin. Founded in 1892 by the Grant family next to the Longmorn distillery. In 1900 it was mothballed with a lot of other distilleries and remained closed until the year of 1965 when it was re-opened by the Glenlivet distillers company.  It changed a …
