Glasgow Single Malt 2019 Release

Another whisky from a young distillery today – this time Glasgow distillery Co. The Glasgow Distillery Company adopts its name from one of Glasgow’s original distilleries. In 1770, The Glasgow Distillery Company was founded at Dundashill and remained active until consequent closure at the beginning of the 20th Century.

In 2014 The Glasgow Distillery Company re-opened after being founded by Liam Hughes, Mike Hayward, and Ian McDougall, becoming the first Single Malt Whisky Distillery in Glasgow for over 100 years.

So a lowlander, a new one. We could use more, so that’s very nice. The expression we’re about to try today was aged in 1st Fill Ex-Bourbon & Finished in Virgin Oak. The bottle does look nice, and they did a nice job at hiding that it’s actually 0.5L and not the regular 0.7. I am not sure if this is intended, but at first, I was sure this was a full-sized bottle, as it’s tall, and a bit thin, but one could easily think it’s a regular-sized whisky bottle… Nifty.

Glasgow Single Malt 2019 rel, 46%, ~ €45

Nose: Feels quite young with a fresh fruity edge, Banana bread, cooked apples, fresh pastries, and a lot of sweet vanilla. There’s also a touch of citrus that balances the sweetness, and quite some wood in the form of wood shavings/sawdust (guess the virgin oak at work there).

Palate: Quite sweet and fresh here as well, with lots of sugar sweetness, vanilla sugar, bananas, maple, corn syrup, buttered and caramel-coated popcorn, a lot of oak again with a bitter touch, a sweet touch and generous spices, a hint of grass.

Finish: Short, herbal, and oak, with more of the sawdust, and vanilla, spicy and sweet.

Conclusion: This is a very fresh and sweet, easy-drinking lowlander, although it’s young it is very enjoyable, do not look for layers and layers of complexity here. There’a nice balance of sweet banana, corn wood, and spice. A light sipper for a summer evening. I will be watching this wee new distillery, would love to see older editions as they are released.
