Mackmyra Moment Tolv (Twelve)

Mackmyra Moment is a series of whiskies from our most exclusive casks, handpicked by Master Blender Angela D’Orazio. Each edition comes in a distinguished black carton with a specific colour scheme and a modern bottle design with an engraved metal plaque.Since the number of casks per bottling are so few, the editions in the Moment series are very limited. The first editions to be released were Moment Medvind and Moment Urberg who where launched on 15 December 2010 in the exclusive range at the Swedish monopoly store Systembolaget.

We’re going to be visiting another expression –  the ‘Moment Tolv’, Tolv means twelve in Swedish, and this whisky is indeed 12 year old. The whisky was distilled way back in 2004, and is from some of the first casks ever to move in to the Bodås mine, 50 meters below ground. After twelve years of maturation, this whisky now finally see the light of day again.

Mackmyra Moment – Tolv , 47% abv ,  £101 (availble at MoM)

Nose: Soft vanilla toes, apples, and once again I find those berries, which have become a trademark for Mackmyra (at least for me), traces of chocolate,  pencil shavings, and oak.

Palate: Lots of vanilla and some wood spice , hints of juniper, and berries, some nuts, and more of that fruity chocolate. It’s a bit rough on the edges. Quite sweet with a biscuity feeling (think: Lotus brand biscuits), and a hint of perfume (we’re not in Bowmore scale, but still).

Finish:  Milk chocolate, wood spice, cinnamon, and berry jam on toast.

It’s a nice sweet-ish , with copious amounts of vanilla and some fruit (mostly berries). It’s not very young, but still there are some blemishes to be ironed out to make it a really nice 12-year-old. If you’re a fan of the distillery profile, might as well try this one. Quite expensive at over 100 quid for what it really is.

Score: 82/100
