Today we’re continuing with the Glendronach \ BenRiach latest releases (not very new, but late last year), with one of the pinnacles in the GD lineup: The Grandeur . It’s already the 8th batch, and this time it’s bottled at CS of 50.3%, for a total of 1,505 bottles, priced at £384… 25 year in ex-Oloroso casks, should do the magic, right?
GlenDronach 25 Year Old – Grandeur Batch 8, 50.3%,£384 / € 499
Nose: Deep and dark with lots of sherry goodness, black berries, succulent and sweet, Demerara sugar, red ripe cherries soaked in liquor, with time more sour-ish sherry notes appear, also lovely oak and prunes, hint of ginger cookies.
Palate: Old oak wood to boot, not as sweet, but some fruit are present indeed. Tea leaf and a hint of tobacco, some sugar and molasses, a vegetal note too, and prunes spread. Delicious oak. Did I say that? Yes.
Finish : Long sweet and lovely. Delicious olden oak chests, wood spices, sweet sherry and leather.
Conclusion:
You’re getting what you pay for here, that’s for sure. Lovely older sherry matured whisky, with all that entails, it’s got the old wood feeling, and the rich sherry effect without being “monstrous” sherry wise. Classic stuff, If you’re a fan of the old style sherry matured whisky, you’re going to enjoy this one a lot. It’s excellent, and at the right ABV mind you. Lovely lovely stuff, more-ish and delicious. Not cheap though… GD die hard fans with deep pockets, this is for you!
