BenRiach 17 Year Old Pedro Ximénez Sherry Finish

Taking a short break from unicorn milk and Special Release whiskies we mostly can not afford, for a much more accessible BenRiach. This is quite a new release,  replacing the 15 year old
Matured in American bourbon barrels, and finished in Pedro Ximenez Sherry casks sourced from the bodegas of Jerez de la Frontera in Andalucia, Spain.  As winter is approaching and it’s getting colder, PX finishes and such are the whiskies I’m reaching out for, and XMAS is THE time for a good old PX cask whisky, right?
Nose:  very nice meaty of sherry stands out,on first sniff. Rich,  thick and sweet with Xmas cake,  raisins,  plum and date. Some chcolate and almonds.
Palate : lovely and luscious dried fruit, trackle and more fruit cake,  chocolate and cigar leaf. Earth, some smoke and wood with spices, Pepper and more deep oaky note, ginger.
Finish : earthy notes. Coffee grounds, cinnamon,  oak and cigar boxes.
it’s a yummy whisky, not overly sweet, but it’s got plenty of PX goodness, fruit, dried fruit and chocolate with a classy touch of cigar leaves/boxes. for under 70 quid, it’s a no brainer really, in today’s whisky climate. Grab a bottle (available at the Whisky Exchange for £66.95) . It’s very enjoyable.

Score: 87/100

  1. Mmmh…. sounds delicious for sure… I too like a sherried dram to get me through the wintry period of the year (gotta pair this with a nice christmas/chanukka [Since I don’t want to offend anyone^^] fruit cake).
I had a Glenfarclas 21 yo once, really nice tannins in there…
This year it’s gonna be Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel…. I really like the stronger flavour profile after tasting some way too watery Bourbons.

    1. Enjoy that. as for bourbons I really like Elijah Craig ful proof, and wile turkey ‘rare breed’ to name a few, that pack a nice punch for winter.

  2. Thank you for the suggestions Gal, I have to try them at some point. I also heard a lot of good stuff about Evan Williams Single Barrel. Is it worth it?

    Cheers
