Glendronach 13yo single cask # 4097 for Whisky Brother shop (South Africa exclusive)

I’ve written about Whisky Brother shop in Jo-burg SA before, A lovely place owned by Marc who’s also a whisky friend. They do bottle exclusive single casks from time to time, and I was happy to receive another sample of their latest exclusive single cask they bottled from the Glendronach distillery. Luckily a friend was visiting SA (thanks Shane), and he was asked to kindly take a wee sample and give it to me. Now a single cask Glendronach is quite common these days, but it is still always fun tasting a whisky from the lovely distillery, right?

A bit of info is in place, right? so… this GlenDronach 13yo single cask is matured in a second fill, Pedro Ximenez sherry puncheon, distilled in March 2003, and bottled in April this year, the cask yielded a total of 519 bottles,  at a cask strength of 54.1%.

Glendronach 13 yo 2003, for Whisky Brother ,R 1,290 glendronach-13yo-single-cask

Nose: lovely sweet dough with cinnamon , stewed fruit mainly apple and apricot , dried fruit on top with a very nice honey sweetness to it, finishing nicely with chilly, and a gingerly spicy edge. Very rich and on the sweet side.
Palate: even richer on the palate with lots of dried fruit goodness: sultana, date and vanilla custard , some earth and nice spicy notes of pepper, and clove. Golden syrup and ripe orange marmalade as well as a touch of aniseed.
Finish: sultana, wood and pepper, cinnamon gum.
A yummy teenage single cask whisky, the PX is not overly strong yet (which is good, if you like some sherry influence but not too much) .  Winter is coming , at least over here in Israel, and this is just the stuff I like sipping when temperatures drop. Good selection of cask.

Score: 88/100

  1. Thanks for the review Gal; glad you liked it! 🙂 As you say, GD single cask is fairly common these days in the international market, but the annual releases don’t make it to SA, and since we love GD (and good ex-sherry cask matured malts are a bit harder to find these days) it was a no brainer to select a WB single cask for SA.
