The lost distilleries blend batch #6

Long ago the nice fellas at Master of Malt send me a box of Xmas crackers for review, and to celebrate the new year with, there was some nice whisky inside those wee packages, and this one one of them. I had not heard much about that before, but this seems a highly interesting blend made up of whisky from closed distilleries, and apparently batch #6 includes whisky from Brora, Caperdonich, Glen Mhor, Glenisla, Imperial, Mosstowie and Port Ellen, with the grain coming from Port Dundas – Nice isn’t it? some epic distilleries that are no longer, all blended to make one NAS whisky (Old NAS, that is). I set out to taste it and here goes:

The lost distilleries blend batch 6 , 49.3% abv , £345 the-lost-distilleries-blend-whisky

Nose : Very nice on the nose with a lemon sherbet start,  some dusty notes underneath as well and a gentle smokiness.  More vegetal /grassy  notes come into focus with time. Green meadow and Hay stacks. There’s also a slight acetone sourish note that tennis me of old grain whisky. There’s some inside for sure (Port dundas – remember?)

Palate:  Creamy on entry with lovely smoke and an earthy touch. Dusty and leathery at the same time, with pickled lemon and sweet malty notes as well.  There’s also a fruity touch grapefruit pith and also grainy notes and tobacco leaves.

Finish : Bitter, peppery and dry with mint. Longish.

This is an excellent whisky, with an cool old style sort of profile,. lots of dustiness and old age, but not too much wood , if you’re afraid of that. I had no Idea this was going to be this good. The only downside is the price, but you can’t expect closed distilleries casks to be bought for cheap, right?

Score: 90/100
