Review: Samaroli–A ferry to Islay–Blended Malt

cal

Milroy’s of Soho, the lovely whisky shop from London is back after some rennovation and new management, and they also opened an online store (it’s time!). If you visit London or live around , you must know this lovely whisky shop situated at Greek street in the Soho district of London. They are on a roll with new tastings, and new bottles in stock, and they have quite a few nice Indies by Samaroli, the well known Italian IB. While shopping there recently for a Jura by Samaroli, I spoke to Lee , the manager, and he was kind enough to send a wee sample of this one along with the order, so thanks Lee. This whisky is A blended malt of Bunnahabhain, Caol Ila and Laphroaig, and bares no age statement.

Ferry to Islay  [Samaroli] , NAS , 55.1% , £179 / 229 EUR sam

Nose: It’s Islay time!  big time : quite a lot of peat reek and tar, with soot and smoky bacon, rather “dirty” peat style which I love, some mint leaves, and a touch of fruit : apples and hints of pineapple, salty nuts and caramelized Banana.

Palate: Boom! There’s a lot of peaty goodness going on here, some pear and apple then  smoked bacon, medicinal stuff (iodine, bandages), and more peat , ash and soot. tarry rope, creosote , leather and earth, then hints of smoky dried bananas and mocha.

Finish: dry, ashy with the smoky banana  , quite earthy too, ash, pepper.

Score: 88/100

This is a very nice whisky, at Cask strength, but I do think 180 quid for a NAS of this quality is a lot, and I mean A LOT of money. Very low VFM.
