Wemyss Malts Single Grain ‘Caribbean Crème’ , Invergordon 1988

This week is going to feature quite a bit of new releases, and the next one I am reviewing is one of Wemyss Malt’s new batch of single cask (a couple will be reviewed), and what a better way to start, than with a single grain. I am quite fond of older grains as you well know, and this one from 1988 is just at the right age at least for me.. (over 25 yo..)

Wemyss Malts Single Grain ‘Caribbean Crème’ , Invergordon 1988, 46%caribbean-creme-1988-bottled-2014-wemyss-malts-invergordon-whisky

Nose: Ah… this is my kind of single grain. Old. Woody. Lots of wood varnish and old word benches with a whiff of balsamic. Yes. We’ve arrived. It’s also quite creamy and coconut-y. Mint and sugar.

Palate: starts hot with pepper and sweet sugary cereals notes. Lots of wood and creamy vanilla porridge too. I’m also getting some bitter grapefruit and orange peel. Quite sharp with an alcohol bite. Feels higher than 46%.

Finish: Wood. Pepper and bitter grapefruit pith.

This is just a lovely whisky. It’s nothing out of this world, but it does offer a good combination of oak, spice and cream with enough age to make it enjoyable (I would have loved to taste it in say 10 more years). Good stuff, and a perfect evening sipper for winter or autumn. Nice!

Score: 86/100
