Arran Miss Black’s bottle–visitor centre exclusive

Some bottles of whisky are that good, they get snatched off the visitor centre in a flash. This is one example. I heard great stuff about this bottle even before tasting it at the Arran whisky tweet tasting (have you read my notes for the Devil’s Punch Bowl part III from that tasting?), and wanted to check if I can score a bottle, but sadly all those were gone.

Faye Black and her newly wed husband

If you’ve no idea what I am talking about, here’s some info about this bottling: Visitor Centre Manager Faye and her new husband David celebrated their marriage in the Visitor Centre in Lochranza.  For this occasion Faye had specially selected an absolutely fantastic dram, so it seems. Bottled at cask strength 51.6%, this Sherry Hogshead is just under 17 year-old,  distilled 23/05/1997, matured in a first-fill, ex-Sherry hogshead #1997/820 and bottled on 08/04/2014 and was exclusively available at the Arran visitor centre for a brief time …

The Isle of Arran – Miss Black’s bottle, 51,6% ABV, sold outmiss-blacks-bottle-3

Nose: Rich , thick that’s one BIG sherry mama.lots of butterscotch candy, plums, thick juices, big first fill sherry, with hint of rubber (we like that in big sherry, we do!)

Palate: Big sherry here, with the raisin, honey, sweet plum, rich toffee, and hint of tobacco too, more time in the glass reveals notes of fruitcake and  cherries. A cracker.

Finish: Tobacco, dried fruit, sweet desert wine, chocolate, cinnamon, spicy chocolate, filled with orange peel.

What can I say my friends, this is a cracking dram, and I regret not being able to get one for myself. Absolutely divine stuff from Arran.

Score: 92/100

  1. I was on Arran then bought three, absolutely enjoyed one, and still have two bottles of it. Wondering what it might be worth. 🙂 Best regards to Faye!
