We’ve arrived at the oldest available Irish whiskey on the market (as far as I know).
In contrast to the other Teeling bottlings this has been exclusively matured in ex-Bourbon casks for the entire 30 years. It is non-chilfiltered and bottled at 46%.
The malt for this was double distilled at a distillery more famous for its triple distilled single malts.Just 250 bottles have been produced.
I had great expectations for this 30 year old, if the 26 year old is anything to go by (check out my review of that one), and it will be exceedingly hard to top the 26 year old, but who knows?
Teeling Whiskey Platinum Vintage Reserve 30 , 46 ABV , NCF , €1,500
Nose: Starts very creamy, but not exotic as the younger versions. more of an orange sort of marmalade note to it, ripe oranges and some notes of fresh baked sweet dough.
Palate: More vanilla, but the red grapefruit makes a big comeback ,with lovely notes of sugared Pomelo , grapefruit, candy and peaches, spiced up by some lovely wood bark.
Finish: wood, peach and grapefruit, spices.
Bottom line:
This is a superb dram, but quite different from the 26 and 21 in profile. Although some of those Grapefruit/Pomelo notes are very noticeable here too, It’s much woodier (in a good way, that is, not over woody), and more citrusy towards the orange kind of spectrum vs. the more exotic spectrum the younger (especially the 26) drams show (if you can call 21 and 26 young…).
Superb stuff, although I must say when compared to the 26, you get more for your buck from that one, and the quality is on par, so I’d get 3 bottles of the 26 for the same price of this one any day. I know this is a dram not many will be able to buy at €1,500, but I guess it’s very limited, and there will certainly be people willing to invest such an amount.
