This is another single cask from the latest batch of 12 casks released by Wemyss just recently. If you remember, I’ve reviewed another Glen Scotia 1991 by Wemyss a few months ago – the “Salted Caramels”, but these two apart from the same vintage, are really very different, quite excellent each in its special way. It’s so very interesting to see two sister casks from the same year, display so many differences. Got to love single malt whisky for that!
Merchant’s Mahogany Chest 1991 (Glen Scotia), 46% , £105
Nose: Flinty lovely Sherry with lots of Tobacco : think Cigar chest. Red fruit. Plum jam. Date and sultana. Brine. Very complex, and very very interestings and tempting.
Palate: Meaty sherry on entry. With chilly chocolate and dried fruit with a touch of espresso bitterness. Spent match sticks and some sulphuric delight. Tobacco leaves. Gunpowder. Berries.
Finish: Brine, dark chocolate. Fruit and smoke/ spent matches.
This is a cracking dram my friends. Really the sort of note I like so much in Glen Scotias. It’s briny and flinty and sweet at the same time. Intriguing. Bottled at the low 46% it’s brilliant. Oh my god, if this was bottled at over 50%. God knows it’s not cheap. but hey, it’s lovely.
