Bruichladdich Islay Barley 2007

After the excellent Octomore 6,1 I had great expectations from the other new releases and this was a good surprise as well. I am not sure how Islay barley differs from “normal” barley, but All i can say is that, this whisky although It’s fairly young did impress me quite a bit. Usually I find that I prefer the peated Laddie to the unpeated, but this one is a real stunning whisky IMHO. Let’s dive:

Bruichladdich Islay Barley 2007, 50%,£44.50bruichladdich-islay-barley-2007-whisky

Nose: This is a really nice nose, did not expect that from such a young malt. Lovely melange of creamy malty goodness , some floral notes, as well as a wee salty breeze. Its not too gentle, some roughness I like,  It’s sturdy, and yet fruity with some pear, and a bit of exotics (pineapple, melon?). A summer day on Islay.

Palate: Full flavoured for sure not sweet and creamy no sir. True Islay character with some wood, and vanilla, rather damp woody sort of, which is very sexy in my opinion. It’s not begging for you to like it, but you shall like it nonetheless. oily, and a bit vegetal, getting more buttery with time, then a little sprinkle of black pepper.

Finish: medium with short bread, malt, and a wee sprinkle of salt.

This is a Superb, and complex dram in spite of its young age. At 50% abv (bravo, laddie! for releasing their new expressions at 50% or higher!!).

I am going to get me a bottle of this one, and so should you. If you appreciate a well done whisky, whish is not too expensive as well.

Bravo!

Score: 88/100

  1. Have yet to taste this edition but I have the 2006 Islay Barley and Bere Barley and they are both supreme!
