Tasting Glengoyne Cask Strength

I’ve reviewed three Glengoyne expressions in the past, but that was a long time ago, before GG released this new Cask Strength expressions. I’ve heard many good things about it, and since it’s NAS I decided to start my little GG series of tasting notes with this (expect the 15yo and 18 yo to follow soon).  The Glengoyne line-up was also repackaged and sports nicer labels and looks. The CS version is made of about 30% 1st fill ex sherry cask 70% refill ex sherry cask, and bottled at a nice 58.7% abv.

Glengoyne Cask Strength Batch 1 , NAS, 58.70% abv , £43glengoyne-cask-strength-batch-1-whisky

Nose: sweet and spicy. Nice sherry touch with cooked apples, allspice, zest and sweet dough (biscuits)  and vanilla. Some  Damp wood and a bit of wood varnish. Very nice nose, and not too sharp in spite of the high % abv.

Palate: Powerful and zingy on entry , a hint of  sherried sultanas. Vanilla. Pepper. Apples and stewed pears. full of malty loveliness.

Finish: Dry , oaky and malty with some dark chocolate and charred oak.

A lovely drop ! Really good stuff, and a nice addition to the range, one of the best GGs I’ve had.

Score: 88/100

  1. Picked up 2 liter bottles of this whisky in Samnaun for Chf 36 (about 29 Euro) each.
Must be an error, I guess, but who cares… 😉
