Tasting Bowmore 1991 Port wood , 16 yo

Not a bottling i was aware of, but got a nice sample from my good friend Phil, who has bought this bottle for his father and liked it so much he kindly gave me a wee taster. Bottled un-chill filtered at cask strength and matured in port casks. 18,000 bottles all in all.  You can find some of these on the Whisky Exchange, if you feel like one. most other web shops are sold out.

let’s dive in:

Bowmore 1991 16 yo , Port wood , 53.1% abv, £66 bowmore-1991-port

Nose: Big winey notes  and tannins. Sweet. Fruity as in  marmalade:  Think apricot. Smoke And peat that go well with the sweeter notes.

Palate: Mega smoke with lots of sweetness and something I can’t quite pinpoint. The we’re off to Earthy peat. Pepper. Lots of sugary stuff and the port is well felt. Not over tannin-y but the wine casks did their magic.

Finish : Sweet peat , leather , wine and smoke.

Very Enjoyable, with quite some wine and smoke, if you are into the combination of peat and wine-y notes, you are going to love this one, but some will find it too sweet. I happen to be on the peat and sweet side, so I loved this.

Score: 88/100

Many thanks to Phil for this lovely sample.

  1. One of my favourite drams when I first started tasting whisky. I was gutted when it was discontinued. Didn’t realise TWE still had some. Thanks Gal!

  2. Looks like this is an exciting whisky I would love. Worth drinking in moderation…
I will get a couple even if I am not sure when they get to join milk and honey in my homeland…
