Tasting Whiskey : Powers John’s Lane 12 yo

powers2Time for a bit of a change with a lovely Irish pot still beauty that is the Powers 12. named after the distillery where it was first made, and aged in a combination of bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks for at least 12 years. This is the first Irish Whiskey review of 2013, and quite a few are in the queue (2012 expressions).Let’s dram. but before that a joke. Can’t have an irish dram without and Englishman, Scotsman, and Irishman , can we?

An Englishman, an Irishman and a Scotsman were sitting in a bar, drinking, and discussing how stupid their wives were. The Englishman says, “I tell you, my wife is so stupid. Last week she went to the supermarket and bought £250 worth of meat because it was on sale, and we don’t even have a fridge to keep it in.” The Scotsman agrees that she sounds pretty thick, but says his wife is thicker. “Just last week, she went out and spent £17,000 on a new car,” he laments, “and she doesn’t even know how to drive!” The Irishman nods sagely, and agrees that these two woman sound like they both walked through the stupid forest and got hit by every branch. However, he still thinks his wife is dumber. “Ah, it kills me every toime oi tink of it,” he chuckles. “Moy woife just left to go on a holiday in Greece. Oy watched her packing her bag, and she must have put about 100 condoms in there. And she doesn’t even have a penis!”

Now it’s time for a dram.

Nose: This baby has a wonderful nose:. Porridge, Sweet cereals with a hint of  nutmeg, then vanilla and buttered sweet brioche. Can you say Yumm!?

Palate: The palate is spicy and peppery on entry then gets sweeter with sugared cereals, vanilla and some creamy espresso, then some more fruit.

Finish: Medium length with bitter espresso wood and burnt buttered toast.

A true cracker, spicy sweet, and very more-ish.

Score: 89/100
