Tasting Two very different Aultmores (MoM, Wemyss)

I recently received to very different samples of Aultmore single cask, the first is a very young CS Aultmore bottled by the chaps at Master of Malt for their proprietary single casks, and the other a much older 30 yo Aultmore bottled by Wemyss Malts, at their regular 46%. A kicking youngster Vs. an older gentleman, could be a very interesting experience p , don’t you think?

I figured out i should start with the 30 year old, since it was only a 46% bottling while the 5 year old was bottled at a whipping 66.8% ! anything after tasting that one at CS would feel watery and dull. Let’s get damming.sugared_alm

Wemyss Malts “Sugared Almonds” Aultmore 30 yo , 1982, 46% ABV, £99

Nose: Marzipan up front. Stewed Apples. Pears. Spice. Tangerine. Cloves and sugar, i can see why they named it sugared almonds. as always, spot on!

Palate: Thick and creamy. Spicy. Wood spices, chocolate, oak. Sponge fruit cake with little bits of dried sugared fruit and zest.

Finish : Getting dry and woody with spicy ginger powder. Medium long.

A very nice elegant dram, a fine selection of cask there. Would it be nicer at 50%? I think so.

Master of Malt , Aultmore 5 yo , 66.8% ABV, £44.95

Nose: A lovely melange of sweet thick butterscotch caramel and sugar with a lovely lemony zest. A really nice combo with lots of sweet stuff going on. Almost grain sort of.

Palate: Sweet lots of sugar,Vanilla, Cream. Spiced wood. Orange liquor and Chocolate filled with liquor.

Finish : Pepper. Getting earthy with hints of spice.

Summary:

All in all those are two very different beasts. a young kicking sweet and zesty candy, Vs. older and more refined marzipan sugar. Pricing is also very different as is ABV. You can’t go wrong with either, all depends on your preference. I’d like to have both, and drink each when the mood is right..

Either way you are in for a treat.
