Tasting Master of Malt Bunnahabhain 20 Year Old 1990 Single Cask

Need I repeat my saying that peat smoke and sherry go well together, or horribly together, depending on the combination. This time we’re in for a treat. This wee wonder was distilled in December of 1990 and aged in a single Spanish oak butt for 20 years before bottling on the 7th November 2011. Just from the colour you can see you’re in for some rich sherry goodness, and boy that is so right!

Bunnahabhain 20 Year Old 1990 – Single Cask (Master of Malt) , 54.10%, £70bunnahabhain-20-year-old-1990-single-cask-master-of-malt-whisky

Nose: Boom! We’re in sherry monster land here. Big sherry notes, with prunes , some matchsticks , sultanas and sweet syrup. A bit of peat smoke but only a bit.  Wonderful. Rich. Thick. I am in love with this nose.
Palate: Rich Rich Rich. Sherry galore. Viscous nectar of Prunes,Sultanas & Spices. Some smoky wood. Beef bouillon. and smoked bacon in sweet marinade of Tamarind.

Finish: A lot of spices, with some Cardamom, prune juice extract.

Bottom line:

A Sherry monster that blows smoke from its nostrils. Thick, rich sweet and fiery. It’s totally brilliant. If you are into this profile (and I know you are…) do not think twice. at £70 this is a no brainer. It’s a must have.

Score: 90/100
