The Wemyss (pronunced : weems) family have had a longstanding passion for malt whisky and their connections with the industry date back to the turn of the 19th century when John Haig (founder of Haig’s) built his first distillery on Wemyss land.Wemyss is the scots word for “cave”. Currently they are an independent bottler which released two series of malts: Blended malts, and single casks. Working for them as a whisky expert is Charlie MacLean who does not need introducing (Keeper of the Quaich since 1992, and a well known whisky writer and expert).
I will be posting my tasting notes of 6 Wemyss malts : 3 Blended malts, and 3 single casks. Wemyss names each expression with nice and very unique names and the ones we’ll be tasting are:
- Smooth Gentleman 8 yo
- Peat Chimney 8 yo
- Spice King 8 yo
- Red Berry Cream single cask, 1990, Highland
- Whispering Smoke 1981, Islay
- Ginger Compote 1996 , Speyside
So, watch this space in the coming week for some Wemyss whiskies.
